Shaun Yoder

Shaun Yoder joined the Ohio Department of Education in January 2017 to develop the state’s strategic plan for education. A top priority for State Superintendent Paolo DeMaria, Ohio’s strategic plan for education is bringing together practitioners and stakeholders to identify a shared vision for student success and an aligned set of goals, strategies and metrics that enable the vision. Shaun also oversees the Department’s initiatives in information technology, operations, and communications and outreach.

Prior to joining the Ohio Department of Education, Shaun served as a senior consultant at Education First. Based in Seattle, WA, Education First’s mission is to deliver exceptional ideas, experience-based solutions and results so all students — and particularly low-income students and students of color — are prepared for success in college, careers and life. He advanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) opportunities for students; helped state, college and school district leaders identify and implement education priorities; and provided strategic counsel to foundations and community partners.

From 2006-2010, Shaun served as executive director of the Ohio Business Alliance for Higher Education and the Economy, an affiliate of the Ohio Business Roundtable. In that role, he developed and maintained a portfolio of strategic policies and tactics designed to double the number of STEM degrees in Ohio by 2015.

Shaun began his career teaching special education at West Jefferson High School in West Jefferson, Ohio. He transitioned into state policy as a 2001 Legislative Service Commission Fellow and staffed Ohio’s Senate Education Committee. He also served as a policy assistant for Ohio Gov. Bob Taft.

The third of seven children, Shaun is a first-generation college graduate. He believes education is the great equalizer and is passionate about college access and completion. Shaun volunteers as chair of United Way of Central Ohio’s High School Graduation Committee. He also serves on the Alumni Council for his alma mater, Anderson University, in Indiana.
