- From the Superintendent - Although we had not planned to issue another EdConnection until after the new year, we have great news on two issues and felt we could not wait to share them with you.
First, Ohio has been awarded almost $70 million for its application for funding for the Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge Grant. The grant will be used to improve the quality of programs that serve high-needs children from birth to five years of age and to carefully measure the results of programs in alignment with Governor John Kasich’s goals of creating better metrics and coordination among agencies that serve young people.
The application development was led by the Governor’s office and prepared through a partnership of the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and Ohio Business Roundtable (BRT). The Ohio Business Roundtable President Richard Stoff brought a business voice and business resources to the partnership, most notably the exceptional expertise of Battelle. Battelle helped the state of Ohio put together a competitive application by providing significant grant and proposal management support.

- From the Superintendent - As many of you know, I have spent the last several weeks traveling throughout the state to discuss the need to implement a college- and career-readiness agenda by the 2014-2015 school year. This includes implementing the new academic content standards now; participating in the new online assessment system that is being developed by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC); expanding the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment so that it measures literacy, numeracy and social-emotional readiness; and redesigning the accountability system to reflect higher student performance expectations and to provide incentives and rewards to schools and districts for academic excellence.

- From the Superintendent - The holiday season is in full force, as teachers and students alike look forward to winter break. For many of you, this is also when high school principals are looking ahead to course planning for the 2012-13 school year. It’s a great time to be thinking about how the course planner aligns with the new academic content standards and the expectations for students’ placement in first year courses at your area colleges. For English, this means offering courses that provide a balance between fiction and nonfiction. For mathematics, greater emphasis is needed on reasoning and probability. It’s important to remember that your current freshmen and sophomores are subject to provisions of the Ohio Core, including the need to earn four credits in mathematics (at least one of which is at the level of Algebra II or its equivalent) and to have instruction in financial literacy. To learn more about the Ohio Core, click here.
