Ohio Core Curriculum Implementation Dates

Amended Substitute Senate Bill (SB) 311, known as Ohio Core, was signed into law on Jan. 3, 2007. A few components below are the result of subsequent legislation. Listed below are key actions, timelines for implementation and links to the applicable sections of the Ohio Revised Code.

Annual report describing dual-enrollment programs. Each city, local, exempted village and joint vocational school district and each chartered nonpublic high school shall offer at least one dual enrollment program to high school students. Programs will enable students enrolled in high school to earn credit toward a higher education degree or complete coursework that may earn credit toward a higher education degree upon the student’s success on an examination covering the coursework. July 30, 2007 In collaboration with the Ohio Board of Regents and the State Board of Education, the Partnership for Continued Learning shall recommend a means of assessing the readiness of high school students to enter college or the workforce, with an emphasis on English and mathematics skills. Sept. 1, 2008 Develop report on teacher quality and preparation. The State Board of Education, in collaboration with the Ohio Board of Regents, shall issue an annual report on the quality of institutions approved for the preparation of teachers. ORC §3319.234
March 31, 2009 Adopt plan enabling students to earn high school credit through a demonstration of subject area competency, with implementation phased in during 2009-2010. ORC §3313.603J

April 30, 2009 Propose standard method and form for documenting credits on high school transcripts. ORC §3301.46
July 1, 2010 Ensure students are prepared for College with no remediation. ORC §3313.603C
July 1, 2010 Ninth-grade students entering school must meet Ohio Core. ORC §3313.603C
July 1, 2010 Each school shall integrate the study of economics and financial literacy into one or more existing social studies credits or into the content of another class so that every high school student receives instruction in these concepts. Schools shall use available public-private partnerships and resources and materials that exist in business, industry and through the centers for economics education at institutions of higher education in the state. June 30, 2012 The State Board of Education shall select one or more methods of assessing readiness for higher education and workforce and include data on district and building report cards. ORC §3302.032
