Race to the Top Parent Leadership Training
Family and community engagement is a critical component under Ohio’s Race to the Top (RttT) state initiative in that it mandates a strong commitment to school, family and community partnerships. Recognizing that engaging our families and communities in the education process promotes both academic and nonacademic success for students and ensures overall school improvement, the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) has embarked on a four-year plan to increase family and community engagement in persistently lowest-achieving (PLA) school districts. To maximize the effectiveness of this engagement, ODE, state, regional and local partners that provide learning support services must cultivate a comprehensive system of supports within the school walls.
To assist RttT districts with persistently low achieving schools and provide additional professional development to RttT districts statewide in their family and community engagement outreach, ODE will offer the following professional development opportunities that will strengthen and extend community supports to all school turnaround communities and help districts meet their overall objectives under the RttT Grant:
1. Parent/Family Leadership Training Program- this program will equip parents/families in persistently lowest-achieving schools with skills that encourage active partnership in the education process, facilitate a comprehensive family, school and community collaboration and promote advocacy of family engagement among peers.
2. Family and Community Engagement Professional Development and Coaching- this program will provide ten county core teams and persistently-lowest achieving schools a comprehensive, systems-based, multi-lingual, statewide professional development curriculum with associated training materials and coaching both via onsite and online.
