Interested in learning more about National Board Certification?
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has funding available through its Targeted High Need Initiative program (THNI) to help Ohio teachers offset $1,000 of the cost of the $2,500 assessment fee for first-time National Board candidates. These funds are available to pay the $350 cost for Ohio candidates to retake one entry of the National Board Certification process.
Candidates interested in financial assistance for either full candidacy or a retake should complete the application found here. Application and payment deadline for first time candidates is Dec. 31, 2011. Application and payment deadline for Retake candidates is Jan. 31, 2012.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has as its mission to establish high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, to develop and operate a national, voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet these standards, and to advance related education reforms to improve student learning in American schools.
Since inception of the program in Ohio in 1993 through 2008, more than 2,900 Ohio teachers achieved National Board certification.
National Board Certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession. A voluntary process established by the NBPTS, certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes more than a year to complete.
Teachers who earn this advanced teaching credential are among the best qualified in the nation to improve instruction, raise student achievement and improve teaching practices in their classrooms, schools and districts.

The state of Ohio biennium budget no longer provides funding for stipends for teachers who are National Board Certified.
