First TORCH honoree announced

4/15/2019

The TORCH recognition program, Teachers of Ohio Representing Character and Heart, honors teachers who model strong character and heart for their students, colleagues and communities.

The first 2019 TORCH honoree is Alicia Spears, a science teacher at STEM+M Early College High School in South Point. The surprise recognition was announced at an international dinner being held by the school on April 11.

Her nominator spoke highly of Spears’ commitment, “She is the most enthusiastic, dedicated, and passionate teacher I have ever seen. She not only creates an exceptional learning environment for her students, but also one for the other teachers.”

Alicia encourages her students to strive for greatness then to give back to the Appalachian region they call home, hoping they will stay to help improve the economy and quality of life.

Alicia is the first of five TORCH honorees who will be recognized in the coming weeks. Nominations came in from students, parents, administrators, community members and fellow teachers across the state. Their works spoke to the remarkable things achieved by Ohio’s educators. From this impressive group of teachers, a committee selected this year’s TORCH recipients.
