Waiver available for offering certain pasta products in National School Lunch Program
The United States Department of Agriculture is allowing providers of the National School Lunch Program to apply for a waiver to offer non-whole grain-rich pasta products. The waiver will only apply during school years 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. The school lunch provider must show that it prepared and offered whole grain-rich pasta last school year and the result was a negative effect, such as less student participation and/or a financial loss. To obtain a waiver from the whole grain-rich pasta requirement, please complete this survey. There is additional information on whole grain-rich requirements, including how to evaluate if a grain product meets the whole grain-rich criteria. Go to the Whole Grain Resource for the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs: A Guide to Meeting the Whole Grain-Rich Criteria, available here. If you have any questions or concerns about the whole grain-rich pasta waiver, please contact the Office for Child Nutrition at 800-808-6325.
