From the Superintendent

Congratulations to the more than 150 Ohio school districts and partners that the Straight A Fund Governing Board recommended Friday to receive grants. The list of finalists now goes to the state Controlling Board, which is expected to formally announce the winners and release the funds Dec. 16. In the meantime, you can see a list of the finalists here.

The process was extremely competitive, with many more applications submitted than could be funded during the initial round of awards. If your district was part of a proposal that didn’t make the list of finalists, please remember that districts, schools and their partners may apply again next fiscal year for an additional $150 million in Straight A Funds. I encourage you to take a close look at the projects funded this time to get a sense of the degree of innovation and financial stewardship for which the Straight A Fund Governing Board is looking. With some adjustments, your proposal may have a good chance of being selected next year.

Speaking of innovation, the next Technology Readiness Tool data snapshot will be taken this Friday, Dec. 13. The Ohio Department of Education ultimately will use data from the Tool to determine which districts lack the technology needed to administer computer-based Next Generation Assessments in 2014-2015 and are eligible to receive pencil and paper tests. We will assume that districts that haven’t submitted data through the Tool feel they will be fully prepared to administer the computer-based assessments next school year. Please ask your district’s data and technology staff to update the data on your current technology inventory for this Friday’s snapshot and continue to keep it current in the coming months. If you have questions, contact Kirk Ross at kirk.ross@education.ohio.gov or (614) 995-4144.

As we approach the wrap-up for the first semester of school in Ohio, I thank you for all you do for our girls and boys.
