USDA Food and Nutrition Service letter mailed to state superintendents
The Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has made available a letter from Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Kevin Concannon regarding student debt and unpaid meal charges in the National School Lunch Program. This letter reinforces Food and Nutrition Service’s belief that such issues must be handled in a way that first and foremost respects and maintains student dignity. The letter also details positive steps that states, districts and schools can take to prevent potential issues. Food and Nutrition Service has mailed the letter to all state superintendents with a request for them to send it on to their district superintendents and school principals.

Schools selected for 2014-2015 oral health screening
The Ohio Department of Health will be conducting a statewide oral health screening of Grade 3 students during the 2014-2015 school year. During the 2013-2014 school year, thousands of students in 210 schools across the state are being screened for cavities, fillings, dental sealants and the need for dental care. During the 2014-2015 school year, students in an additional 223 schools will be screened. The sample of schools chosen to participate represents every county in Ohio.

It is important that the school(s) selected from your district participates to ensure the screening’s validity. Superintendents of districts with schools in the sample will receive an email providing more information from the Ohio Department of Health. For questions about the screening, call the Ohio Department of Health Oral Health Program at (614) 466-4180 or visit the Make Your Smile Count! Oral Health Screening website.
