Road to the Ohio Statehouse! Get learning resources for the governor’s inauguration

Next week, students will have an opportunity to learn about the building blocks of state government and watch the inauguration of Ohio’s next governor. At noon on Jan. 14, Gov.-elect Mike DeWine and Lieutenant Gov.-elect Jon Husted will take the oath of office during a public ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. There are many learning opportunities connected to this event, and the Ohio Department of Education has resources for educators to jump-start classroom excitement.
Before your class tunes in to watch on the Ohio Channel, students can take part in an array of present-day and historic explorations. As their learning journey leads them to Ohio’s Inauguration Day, students can analyze the 2018 gubernatorial campaign, understand the executive branch and the governor’s role, and look at the timeline of our state’s leaders. As they research and pinpoint takeaways from Gov.-elect DeWine’s inaugural address, students can make deeper connections to how state officials and their decisions can influence the world around them.
Click here to access Ohio's Inauguration Toolkit, including a set of discussion starters for viewing the inauguration and activities to extend learning after the inaugural address. The toolkit includes activities for students of various grades and connections to Ohio’s Learning Standards for Social Studies.
