Requirements for foster care students

7/10/2017

ESSA requires that your district or community school designate a point of contact for the educational stability of children in foster care for the 2017-2018 school year. Also, Dec. 10, 2016, was the deadline to have procedures on file for best interest determinations and the transportation of students in foster care. Ohio’s ESSA foster care guidance suggests you develop these procedures with your local county child welfare agencies. It is critically important that interagency transportation agreements are in place. This ensures that transportation cost sharing, as well as a dispute resolution procedure are in place. Finally, please make sure those responsible for enrolling students at each school know to enroll students in foster care immediately.

All guidance and support documents are located on the Department's website. You will find the model best interest determination form, sample transportation form and the most up-to-date lists of district, community school, educational service center and county child welfare agency points of contact.
