Virtual professional development opportunities for school nurses
The Ohio Department of Health has announced two virtual professional development opportunities for school nurses this summer:
- The 2020 Summer Conference for School Nurses: Homelessness - The Ohio Department of Health School Nursing is presenting a virtual conference for nurses licensed by the Ohio Board of Nursing who work in the school setting. This conference will feature presentations regarding homelessness. Topics include defining homelessness, health and education indicators, nursing interventions, the McKinney-Vento Act, trauma-informed care and resources. Find out how to register and learn more here.
- Orientation for Nurses New to Ohio Schools - The Ohio Department of Health offers an orientation for registered nurses who have fewer than two years of experience working in schools and have not previously attended an orientation. Presentation topics include general school nurse responsibilities; immunizations; communicable diseases; special education services; Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and documentation; human trafficking with school nurse protocol, Medicaid Schools Program (MSP) and Medicaid Administrative Claiming (MAC) reimbursement; chronic disease management utilizing Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs); Ohio school nurse licensure; medication administration training; child maltreatment; screening procedures and requirements for vision, hearing, dental and Body Mass Index (BMI); postural screening; and autism. Presentations include laws and rules related to the practice of nursing that meet the Category A criteria for nursing license renewal. Find out how to register and learn more here.
