Deadline extended for Ohio Teacher of the Year Nominations to May 1

There is still time to nominate an outstanding teacher in your school or district for the 2013-2014 Ohio Teacher of the Year. The deadline for nominations has been extended to May 1, and the deadline for nominated teachers to submit their applications has been extended to June 1. Both superintendents and principals may nominate exemplary teachers. The Ohio Teacher of the Year program is part of the National Teacher of the Year program sponsored by the Council of Chief School State Officers. Time remains to nominate an outstanding grade 6-12 teacher for Ohio’s Talent Pool

ODE is continuing to accept recommendations for Ohio’s Talent Pool until May 15. The pool is a file of educators, including principals and teachers that the state may consider for advisory board and task force memberships as well as candidacy for special recognition programs. Currently, the pool lacks representation from relatively new educators, so this year ODE is accepting recommendations only for teachers in Grades 6-12 who fit that description. Reminder: New Ohio law requires additional concussion awareness training for coaches

Beginning April 26, anyone applying for a new or renewal pupil activity (coaching) permit must complete specific training on recognizing the signs and symptoms of concussions and head injuries as well as brain injury management.

Either of two online training courses listed on the Ohio Department of Health’s Concussion in Youth Sports webpage will satisfy this requirement. Concussion in Sports – What You Need to Know offered by the National Federation of State High School Associations and the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention program Heads Up – Concussion in Youth Sports Online Training Program are both free and take an hour or less to complete.

A certificate of completion may be printed out upon successful completion of either training. Applicants should submit a copy of the certificate with the pupil activity permit application.
