Local administrators and teachers are creating student learning objectives to measure student progress for subjects in which traditional state or vendor assessments are not an option – such as art or music. Four- and five-year graduation rate data review period open until May 31

Last school year, Ohio began using the U.S. Department of Education Four-Year Adjusted Cohort Graduation Rate to evaluate schools’ and districts’ success on getting students to earn a diploma within four years of entering ninth grade for the first time. This rate was included on the 2011-2012 Local Report Card for the graduating class of 2011.

This year, a five-year cohort was added to measure the progress schools are making to improve the number of students graduating in five years. The 2012-2013 report cards will include four-year rate data from the graduating class of 2012 and five-year rate data from the graduating class of 2011.

The Ohio Department of Education recognizes that the process of creating and adjusting graduation cohorts is critical. A problem could arise when a district or school is unable to make necessary adjustments because the appropriate EMIS reporting period has closed. Now is the time to review class of 2011 and 2012 student graduation data to determine if there is now evidence indicating that a different withdrawal code and reason, one that removes the student from the denominator of the graduation rate calculation, should have been reported for the student. In such cases, corrections can be made by completing and e-mailing this form to the department’s Office of Accountability by Friday, May 31.  Only one student and one adjustment request may be included on each form.

Early Literacy and Reading Readiness grants awarded

Last week, 91 educational entities were selected to receive the Early Literacy and Reading Readiness Grant, which provides an opportunity for districts and community schools to pursue funding from a pool of $13 million. The Early Learning Grant, designed to support the design and implementation of a K-3 early literacy and reading intervention concept that assists students in improving and enhancing their reading development and prepares them to read at grade level by the end of third grade, was instituted as part of Ohio House Bill 487. 

A total of 248 applications requesting more than $44.4 million were received and reviewed, with 153 applicants applying as part of a consortium and 95 applying individually. The 91 applicants selected were awarded funding based on the quality of their applications and their budgets.

The award winners are comprised of public school districts, public libraries, educational service centers, institutions of higher education, preschools, and public or private organizations. A complete list of award winners is available here.

Among the 91 applicants receiving funding:

  • 20 individual applicants received approximately $1.4 million (average of $71,900); and
  • 71 consortia received approximately $11.6 million (average of $162,900).

Two webinars explaining coding changes related to expenditure rankings next week

The Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Quality School Choice and Funding is hosting webinars to explain upcoming changes to the Uniform School Accounting System (USAS) codes. The changes are being made to help districts and community schools in implementing data reporting that will enable the department to fulfill Ohio Revised Code requirements to rank school districts by expenditures in late fall 2013.

During the webinar, participants will learn how to code expenditures and how coding choices will affect spending reports and the expenditure rankings. They also will learn about a “crosswalk” resource that will indicate how to code and properly place expenditures. The first webinar, targeted to traditional school district treasurers, was presented today and will be repeated on May 15 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. A presentation for community school treasurers will be held May 13, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Eight Ohio schools named national Schools to Watch

Eight of the 115 schools recognized by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform as “Schools to Watch” are from Ohio. Four of the eight schools - Nagel Middle School, Napoleon Central Elementary School, Reading Middle School and Wadsworth Middle School - were newly designated  while St. Henry Middle School, Teays Valley West Middle School, Van Wert Middle School and Wadsworth Central Intermediate School retained their designation.

Launched in 1999, Schools to Watch began as a national program to identify middle-grades schools across the country that were meeting or exceeding 37 criteria developed by the Forum.
