Help us celebrate a week of Wonder!

This week, the Ohio Department of Education is celebrating the release of the film Wonder, based on the best-selling book by R.J. Palacio. Counting down to the film’s nationwide premiere on Friday, Nov. 17, the Department asks Ohio’s educators and students to share their stories and activities each day based on a theme from the book.

The Ohio Department of Education invites Ohioans to submit suggestions through Dec. 11 as part of a periodic update for Ohio’s Learning Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics – Extended.

Grant available for Advanced Career courses in STEM fields

Ohio high schools and career-tech centers can apply for $10,000 competitive grants to implement Advanced Career pathways in STEM fields during the 2018-2019 school year. Ohio and its partners – the Southern Regional Education Board’s High Schools That Work and a consortium of states – developed several career-tech programs aligned to the 21st-century workplace in multiple pathways. The grant must be used to implement new Advanced Career pathway curricula.

Schools now have HOPE for opioid prevention

Schools now can use the HOPE (Health and Opioid Prevention Education) Curriculum to meet Ohio’s requirement for local boards of education to include opioid abuse instruction in their health curricula. The K-12 curriculum is a set of grade-band focused lessons, assessments and learning materials to give students the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to avoid drug abuse. It dovetails with Ohio’s Start Talking! program, which gives teachers and parents tools to use when talking to children about drugs.
