Ohio Alternate Assessment Participation Waiver public comment period open through Nov. 18
A new provision in Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), addresses alternate assessments for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. Each state must submit a waiver request to the United States Department of Education if it predicts exceeding 1 percent participation in the alternate assessment in a subject.
Ohio’s 2016-2017 alternative assessment participation rate was approximately 1.7 percent in reading, 1.8 percent in mathematics and 1.9 percent in science. Due to this rate, Ohio must request a waiver to the 1 percent cap for the 2018-2019 administration of the alternate assessment in reading, math and science. Ohio will be submitting a waiver to the U.S. Department of Education by Nov. 20, 2017.
The Department will be taking public comments here on the proposed 1 percent waiver from Oct. 18 through Nov. 18, 2017.
