The Ohio Department of Education, along with several local, state and regional partners, was awarded a $2 million school-based mental health federal grant to improve access to mental health and behavioral health services in Appalachian counties in southeastern Ohio. Over the next five years, the grant will be used to implement school-based mental health care and increase the overall number of mental health care providers in the region through recruitment, employment and retention strategies.

Youngstown City School District has partnered with Quickmed Urgent Care to open two school-based health centers in the district this fall. The school-based health centers, funded through the state’s Student Wellness and Success Funds, complement the crucial work of school nurses to provide much-needed medical care to students, families, staff and the community.

The Department is looking for parents interested in participating in six virtual discussion committees to review performance levels for Ohio’s State Tests in English language arts and mathematics. Applications for these parent discussion committees must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16. Interested participants should have online access for viewing the meeting information virtually, but video capability is not required.
