Resources available for National Suicide Prevention Month

9/24/2018

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and education can be a valuable key to youth suicide awareness and prevention.

  • After a Suicide: A Toolkit for Schools, Second Edition – The toolkit provides schools with best practice recommendations, templates and step-by-step instructions on effective postvention in the school community. Materials provide schools with directions on how to plan for effective school responses to suicides before a death occurs in the community, as well as straight-forward recommendations for communication, outreach and student support in the immediate and long-term follow-up after a suicide.
  • Kognito Trainings – The free training offers research-proven training simulations designed to prepare educators, staff and students to recognize when someone is exhibiting signs of psychological distress or underlying trauma and to manage a conversation with the goal of connecting them with the appropriate support. The Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation promotes and implements free Kognito trainings in schools as part of the Ohio Campaign for Hope: Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative, along with offering other statewide resources.
Information about Ohio’s Suicide Prevention Plan are available on the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services website.
