CollegeAdvantage celebrating 25 years of helping families save for higher education with free workshops and college savings giveaways

For 25 years, CollegeAdvantage has been helping families in Ohio and across the country save for college. To kick off the 25th anniversary, CollegeAdvantage will present free introductory workshops on saving for college. The workshops will be held in 25 different cities across the state during April.

Innovative leadership training for STEM school leaders

Principals, assistant principals and other building-level leaders in STEM and other innovative schools have a tuition-free opportunity to learn from national STEM and innovative school leaders. The Innovative Leaders Institute, a year-long training and mentoring experience, creates and grows an Ohio network of innovative STEM school leaders. Watch a short video about the experience of Jason Johnson, principal of West STEM High School, Columbus City Schools, a former participant in the first Innovative Leaders Institute.

New initiatives expand career advising and career-tech opportunities for students

Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, each school district and joint vocational school district must adopt a policy on career advising. The intent is to expand advising services and critical supports that students receive to prepare them for successful futures.

Nominate a district Ohio Teacher of the Year candidate by April 30; more recognition opportunities available

More teachers will gain recognition than ever before at the school district and regional levels through the 2016 Ohio Teacher of the Year program that was restructured to include new State Board Territory Teacher of the Year awards for the 11 State Board territories. State Board of Education members, together with leaders in their territories, are currently contacting district superintendents to actively promote the competition.

Recommendations being accepted for Ohio’s Talent Pool

The state of Ohio maintains a file of emerging classroom leaders that consists of a cadre of distinguished teachers and principals. These educators may be considered for membership on advisory boards and task forces, as well as candidates for special recognition programs. Final Rule publication for Professional Standards for School Food Service

The final rule for professional standards institutes hiring standards for the selection of state and local school nutrition program directors and requires all personnel in school nutrition programs to complete annual continuing education/training. The U.S. Department of Agriculture published a quick reference guide to explain the professional standards final rule. The full final rule also is available here.
