First Straight A Fund Innovation Conference is Feb. 5

Educators and the general public are invited to the first Straight A Fund Innovation Conference on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Statehouse. This inaugural summit will bring together students, industry thought leaders, educators, legislators and the business community to showcase innovative ideas, achievements and best practices implemented by Straight A grant recipients. More than 40 projects, plus business and community partners, will be displayed.

Public comment open for draft rule for implementing reading achievement improvement plans

K-3 Literacy is the newest measure on the Ohio School Report Cards for districts and schools. Those with consistently low ratings on the K-3 Literacy report card measure must create and submit a reading achievement improvement plan for reading by Dec. 31, 2016.

Career-technical education senior only credential program

Many seniors have limited coursework the last year of high school. This initiative will allow districts to implement industry-recognized credential programs to meet the needs of districts and students, as well as provide business and industry partners with a skilled workforce.

Ohio legislation updated graduation requirements to ensure that all students are ready for success in college and work.

A special opportunity to teach in Taiwan

Ohio teachers have the opportunity to spend a year living and teaching English in Taiwan through a memorandum of understanding with Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. New and experienced elementary and middle school teachers are invited to apply to participate in the Teaching in Taiwan program for the 2015-2016 school year. Math performance-based practice tests now available

Here are practice tests for performance-based math tests in grades 3-8, algebra I and geometry. The practice tests will help teachers and students understand the new state tests students will take in February and March. The performance-based test is part one of the new state math test and covers knowledge and skills taught 75 percent into the school year. Students will solve multi-step problems that require reasoning and address real-world situations. The answers are scored by hand and computer. The practice tests have a scoring capability built into the tool and provide answer keys.
