Adult High School Diploma Program Provider Application open

Currently, there are over one million adults in Ohio without a high school diploma. The Adult (22+) High School Diploma Program creates a new pathway for these individuals ages 22 and over to earn a high school diploma. The provider application opens on March 16 for eligible educational institutions interested in providing this opportunity to adult learners.

ESEA waiver extension

The Ohio Department of Education plans to submit an application to the U.S. Department of Education to extend its Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) flexibility waiver for an additional three years. The deadline to submit extension requests to the U.S. Department of Education is March 31, 2015.

Kindergarten - Grade 3 standards open for public comment

The department invites Ohio educators and the public to comment on new learning and development standards for children in kindergarten through grade three. The standards seek to create an understanding of the whole child and guide instruction that supports all areas of learning. No tests are tied to these standards, but they will help determine how to best support students.

Public comment open for physical education standards

Ohio is updating physical education standards for K-12 public schools, which were established in 2007. Physical education teachers representing all grade bands in Ohio K-12 public schools and higher education comprise the 20-member committee that is reviewing and has drafted the standards to better meet the needs of and provide more options for all students.

Guidance available for schools seeking Accessible Educational Materials for students with print disabilities

For some students, printed instructional materials can be a barrier to participation and achievement in the general education curriculum. Accessible Educational Materials remove that barrier. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, state and local education agencies must ensure that children with disabilities who need Accessible Education Materials in the four specialized formats receive those materials in a timely manner, which is defined in Ohio as the delivery of the accessible materials at the same time as their peers receive their materials.

New Braille Code for Students who are Blind/Visually Impaired

The Braille Authority of North America adopted Unified English Braille to replace the current English Braille American Edition in the United States. The official braille codes for the United States will be Unified English Braille, Nemeth Code for Mathematics and Science Notation, Music Braille Code and The IPA Braille Code. States are expected to have most phases or plans to transition in place by Jan. 4, 2016.
