Information for six honors diplomas is now available

High school students can get state recognition for exceeding Ohio’s graduation requirements through an honors diploma. Students challenge themselves by taking and succeeding at high-level coursework and participating in real-world experiences.

School Schedules – Making Up Time

Ohio district and school schedules now are measured by hours, not days. As a result, there are no longer calamity days in Ohio schools. Instead, schools should schedule hours above the minimum number required by Ohio law to accommodate weather-related situations that delay or cancel school. Districts do not have to make up hours they had scheduled above the required minimum. However, if a school closes enough hours to fall below the minimum number required, the school must make up those hours by extending its scheduled year.

SICA annual recognition of schools that have significantly changed

Achieving significant school change is challenging. The School Innovation and Change Awards (SICA), sponsored by the National Principals Leadership Institute, recognizes once-failing schools that have embraced new and innovative strategies to dramatically improve. Coaching permit holders have a new requirement

A new state requirement from Ohio Senate Bill 252 (Lindsay’s Law), effective March 14, 2017, affects pupil activity (coaching) permit holders. All individuals who coach athletic activities must annually complete a sudden cardiac arrest course approved by the Ohio Department of Health. In early May, that department is expected to announce a new course for fulfilling this requirement.
