Free activity, coloring and music resources available from ODNR

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry helps educate people about the dangers of wildfires and how to prevent them. National Fire Prevention Week begins Oct. 4th and the department of natural resources has free resources for educators and parents available to teach kids about protecting Ohio’s forests and woodland creatures, including an animated Smokey Bear music video for sing-along activities.

ISearch now features Research Starters, new STEM content; ISearch local rolling out

ISearch now features topical Research Starters on the Advanced Sources, Advanced Encyclopedias and STEM tabs. Research Starters include overview information, definitions of important terms and bibliographies to help students begin research on new topics confidently. The STEM tab now also includes resources from the science, math and technology EBSCO databases. Science Online, which includes virtual experiments and thousands of science diagrams, will be searchable through ISearch later this fall.

Clarification provided for districts wishing to continue use of value-added in teacher evaluations

The Ohio Department of Education has received several questions about how the changes in safe harbor in the state budget bill (House Bill 64) affect evaluations of teachers who teach courses with value-added data. Because of these modified safe harbor provisions, school districts will not use value-added ratings from state tests for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years as part of educator evaluations or when making decisions regarding dismissal, retention, tenure or compensation – unless they establish memoranda of understanding to do so.

Scores set for industry credential and workforce readiness graduation option

The graduation requirements for the classes of 2018 and beyond include curriculum and three options to show readiness for next steps in college and careers. To graduate through the industry credential and workforce readiness option, a student must earn 12 points through a State Board of Education-approved industry-recognized credential or group of credentials in a single career field and achieve a workforce readiness score on the WorkKeys assessment.
