ODE Announces $13 Million Early Literacy and Reading Readiness Competitive Grant Program
Release date: 10/29/2012
In June, the Ohio General Assembly enacted the framework known as the Third Grade Reading Guarantee intended to ensure that all Ohio’s students are reading at grade level by the end of third grade. Included in the legislation (HB 487) was $13 million for schools to provide intervention programs to help children overcome reading deficiencies which otherwise may prevent them from progressing to fourth grade.
“This funding provides the opportunity for schools and districts to implement early literacy and intervention programs that provide our students with the tools they need to be reading at grade level by the end of third grade,” said Michael Sawyers, Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction. “These grants will allow schools to place an emphasis on student progress instead of student retention.”
Individual school districts and community schools can receive up to $100,000 in funding and consortia of three or more partners can receive up to $250,000. Priority will be placed on partnerships.
Information on and access to the application process is available on ODE’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee webpage.
