Ohio Department of Education Announces Newly Designated STEM Schools

Ohio’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Committee recently approved 12 new STEM schools for next school year that will focus on inquiry and a design-thinking approach to science, technology, engineering, mathematics, the arts and humanities. Thanks to new legislation, elementary schools (kindergarten through fifth grade) are now able to receive the designation.

Special Award for Ohio’s Military-Friendly Schools Announced

At an event celebrating the Month of the Military Child at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria announced the creation of the Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools. Ohio now will distinguish schools across the state that show a commitment to serving military-connected students and families.

The State Board of Education on April 11 recommended Ohio lawmakers create additional options for earning a high school diploma for students in the class of 2018. The options would be offered to Ohio students who entered the ninth grade for the first time between July 1, 2014 and July 1, 2015.
