State Board of Education to Meet Sept. 9 and 10 at Ohio Department of Education

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The State Board of Education will conduct its monthly meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 9 and 10 at the Ohio Department of Education, 25 S. Front Street, Columbus.
The first day of the board meeting will be highlighted by a hearing on the Operating Standards for Ohio School Districts and Schools, the rules that schools must follow while educating Ohio students. The hearing will have testimony from representatives from the Ohio School Boards Association, the Buckeye Association of School Administrators, the Catholic Conference of Ohio, the Ohio Education Association, the Ohio Federation of Teachers and the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education. Testimony and discussion will allow these stakeholders to give their views of the operating standards and how they might be improved. The hearing is schedule for 1 p.m.
Also on Monday, the Capacity, Achievement, Urban Education and Executive committees will meet in the morning with the Accountability Committee meeting in the afternoon.
On Tuesday, the board will receive an update from the Legislative and Budget Committee and see a presentation from the Graduation Requirements Committee.

The State Board of Education has set education policy and directed the planning and evaluative functions of Ohio’s public schools, as well as appointed and evaluated the superintendent of public instruction, since 1956. The vision of the State Board is for all students to graduate well prepared for success. The State Board is made up of 19 members, including 11 elected and eight appointed members. The chairs of the education committees of the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate serve as ex officio members.
