Details: Opportunity to see first-hand the unique and innovative educational opportunity for Spanish
language acquisition through a standards-based curriculum in a safe and caring learning environment for area students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Program: Low pupil to teacher ratio provides students with more individualized attention, focusing on the acquisition of academic standards and Spanish language skills. Acquiring proficiency in a second language requires a commitment of at least three years. This opportunity boosts students’ global and cultural awareness, preparing them to be active participants in a society becoming internationally interconnected. Students are fully immersed in Spanish in kindergarten, first and second grades. Forty years of research shows that by fifth or sixth grade, immersion students “will be equal to or surpass their monolingual peers” on required state assessments.
Background: The Mansfield immersion program is the fifth immersion program in Ohio. It is a public school with a rich cultural mix of students who bring a wide range of talents. The teachers are from Spain, are highly qualified and certified teachers in the State of Ohio. Curriculum is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Students learn academic concepts through Spanish rather than English. Students acquire the target language in a natural way that is “in addition” to their academic content learning, not “instead of.” Students also enjoy using a computer lab, library and science lab, and participate in art, music and physical education classes.
