Equipment Grants Awarded to Ohio Schools

Release date: 2/3/2016

Nearly $775,000 in Funding Given to Improve Food Safety, Expand Accessibility to Food Services

Forty-seven recipients will receive awards totaling $775,000 through the National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance Grant.

The 2014 Agriculture Appropriations Act authorized the Ohio Department of Education, Office for Child Nutrition to competitively award equipment grants to eligible schools participating in the National School Lunch Program. The department received $773,407 for distribution in 2016.

School food authorities submitted 149 grant applications to the department’s Office for Child Nutrition. The department estimates that applicants requested more than $15 million in grant funding.

The funds will assist with unmet needs and allow for the purchase of capital equipment. This will help schools to serve healthier meals, meet nutritional standards by using fresh fruits and vegetables in school meals, improve food safety and expand accessibility to food services.  Recipients will receive coolers, freezers, ovens, salad bars, point-of-sale systems, refrigerators and other needed equipment as a result of the grant.

High-needs schools (schools in underserved areas, schools with limited access to other resources and schools with older food service equipment), where more than half of enrolled students are eligible for free or reduced price meals, received funding priority. Within this group, schools that did not receive previous Equipment Assistance Grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and Fiscal Year 2010 or the 2015 Equipment Assistance Grant received additional priority.
