Graduation Requirements Work Group Update for the Class of 2018
Release date: 3/30/2017
After more than two months of constructive discussion on Ohio’s graduation requirements for the class of 2018, Ohio’s Graduation Requirements Work Group has made recommendations to State Superintendent Paolo DeMaria. The superintendent will study them and take his final recommendation to the board in April. State Board of Education members will consider the proposal in future meetings.
The State Board passed a resolution in December 2016 to direct the superintendent of public instruction to create a work group to review the graduation requirements and consider any alternative approaches for the class of 2018. Educators, a parent and other stakeholders served on the work group.
The State Board would need to vote on any proposed adjustments to the number of points a student needs to earn a diploma through the end-of-course exam pathway. The Ohio General Assembly would have to take legislative action to make changes to any of the three of Ohio’s graduation pathways.
This year’s high school seniors (the class of 2017) will graduate under current requirements.
