COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) received a total 18,928 requests for two scholarship programs that provide funding for students to attend schools outside their districts during the upcoming 2012-2013 school year.
According to the ODE Office of Quality School Choice and Funding, 17,438 Ed Choice applications were received, including 3,814 new applicants. Additionally, ODE received 1,544 requests for the new Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship Program.
Ohio Superintendent for Public Instruction Stan Heffner has approved a new plan to improve the Youngstown City Schools that includes doubling the time elementary school students spend studying reading and providing students with more opportunities to learn at higher levels both within the district and online.
