After more than two months of constructive discussion on Ohio’s graduation requirements for the class of 2018, Ohio’s Graduation Requirements Work Group has made recommendations to State Superintendent Paolo DeMaria. The superintendent will study them and take his final recommendation to the board in April. State Board of Education members will consider the proposal in future meetings.
Tests that students take each year serve a variety of purposes. Parents, teachers, schools, districts and the state use them to design instruction, understand student knowledge growth, measure teacher effectiveness and capture overall state and district performance. Some Ohio tests also serve to comply with federal requirements to help the federal government understand how our nation’s education system is performing.
For the third year, community organizations, faith- or values-based groups and businesses are being asked to partner to encourage one-on-one mentorship in Ohio’s schools and help give more students access to role models who can motivate and inspire them.
The Ohio Department of Education is taking several steps to further engage the state’s education stakeholders and develop a strategic plan for education in Ohio.
The Ohio Department of Education is now accepting applications for scholarships for students assigned to underperforming public schools, students from lower income families or those with special needs for the 2017-2018 school year. The awarded scholarships help students attend participating private schools or providers.
