Know! Body Image Matters

StartTalkingImage.jpgSummer is a season of sleeveless tops, shorts and bathing suits, so what better time than now to talk with youth about their body image. Body Image is the way individuals think and feel about their own body, as well as how they perceive others to think and feel about their appearance. Heavily influenced by family, friends and media, one’s body image can be positive or negative.

Two additional graduation options available for the class of 2018 only

The Department expects that most students will meet one of the three existing pathways and districts should continue to work with students, as appropriate, to meet these requirements. However, the recent budget bill authorized two additional options only for students in the class of 2018 who entered grade 9 between July 1, 2014, and June 30, 2015. These options provide an opportunity for those students who do not otherwise meet one of the three existing pathways to graduation to earn a diploma.

Know! To Pause, Breathe, Think, Act

Burgers-1.jpgIn a previous Know! tip, the Effect of Peer Presence, we discussed the fact that the mere presence of peers can lead a young person to take risks he or she wouldn’t normally take on their own, and that the main culprit is the adolescent brain and its underdeveloped self-control center. In addition to parental supervision and extra caution when allowing your tween/teen to gather with friends, experts say we can help our children curb those impulsive tendencies by encouraging greater self-control.
