Laura Kohler

President, Member At-Large

Laura Kohler is serving her second four-year term on the State Board of Education of Ohio. Originally appointed to the board by Governor John Kasich in 2019, she was reappointed by Governor Mike DeWine to a second term ending in December 2024. Laura is in the first year of her second two-year term as president of the State Board.

Ms. Kohler was elected to the Worthington City Board of Education in 1990 after serving as the co-chair of the levy committee that secured the funds to build the community’s second high school. While on the board, she served as both president and vice president and was recognized for her consistent commitment to placing the best interests of students ahead of other competing entities.

When her family moved to New Albany, Ms. Kohler continued her involvement in public education by serving on the district levy committee, communication committee, finance committee and leadership group for the district’s strategic plan. She also was a leader of New Albany for Kids, a nonprofit educational excellence advocacy organization. She was elected to the school board in 2010. While on the board, Ms. Kohler served as president, chair of the district’s finance committee, represented the board in four contract negotiations and continued to advocate for diverse opportunities, high expectations and continuously improving achievement levels for students. She resigned from the New Albany-Plain Local Board of Education to accept her current position.

Ms. Kohler earned her undergraduate degree in English and history from Duke University and received her MBA from the University of Dayton. She has both corporate and nonprofit board experience. She currently serves as an appointed representative to the Education Commission of the States and a member of Governor DeWine’s Early Childhood Advisory Council.

Ms. Kohler is the mother of four adult children and the proud Mimi of five wonderful grandchildren who continue to inspire and motivate her work on behalf of each Ohio student.

Under Ms. Kohler’s leadership, the State Board remains focused on preparing every Ohio graduate to earn a living wage, continue with postsecondary education and/or serve in the military. She is an advocate for equity, quality schools and effective community partnerships.
