Career Readiness Leaders Network - Virtual Meet-ups
The Ohio Department of Education Career Connections team will be facilitating virtual meet-ups in partnership with the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio for Ohio’s career readiness leaders to discuss and share best practices around engaging students in career-connected education and advising during the current pandemic and beyond. Visit the Ohio Department of Education’s Remote Learning webpage for resources on career connections and offer feedback on these sessions.

- November 9, 2020 @ 1:00 p.m. - "Supporting Students in Learning Skills to Get and Keep a Job!"
- December 14, 2020 @ 1:00 p.m. - "Work-Based Learning Models that Work!"
- January 11, 2021 @ 1:00 p.m. - "Recentering on Career Advising"
- Additional meetings will be held at 1:00p on the 2nd Monday of each month: March 8th, April 12th, and May 10th.
Entrepreneurship Webinar
To celebrate National Entrepreneurs’ Day, the Ohio Department of Education, SCORE of Central Ohio, Young Entrepreneur Institute and Ohio Afterschool Network are hosted interactive webinar on Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. Teachers, educational service center staff and school administrators interested in developing and teaching students entrepreneurship as a viable career path are invited to attend.
Topics covered in this interactive webinar included:
- Start-up basics;
- Researching business concepts;
- Developing marketing plans;
- Marketing projections;
- Funding sources.
Feed and Fuel Your Future Career virtual learning series
Help students find their future career! The Ohio Department of Education is collaborating with the Ohio Soybean Council, Ohio Corn & Wheat and Grow Next Gen to connect science and agriculture careers through a virtual learning series for students.
Through the GrowNextGen and Feed the World education programs, presenters will provide live virtual field trips, lessons and career panels each week to help students consider the relevant, abundant STEM careers available in agricultural fields.
We hope you plan to join us throughout this 4 week series to connect science through agriculture and help your students find their future career!
Week of Oct 5: Finding Flavor in a Food Science Career
Learn about the science behind food safety and development!
Virtual Field Trip
Date/time: Tuesday, October 6, 1PM
Location: Cargill, Sidney, OH
VIEW THE RECORDED TRIP HERE
This 45-minute trip will connect students directly with Andrea Flowers, a merchant working at Cargill, Inc. in Sidney, Ohio, for a LIVE tour of the Cargill facility. Students will learn about careers in the food processing industry and see the production of soybean oil and animal feed from raw soybeans. They'll also learn about the importance of engineering in food packaging and distribution.
Virtual Lesson - Reading Food Labels
Date/Time: Wednesday, October 7, 1PM

Learn how to read a food label and why labels are important for increasing your knowledge of nutritious foods. Many words used on packaging have meanings that are specific to each of us, rather than definitions that are universal. Our educator experts will lead you through a lesson to share LIVE with your class, or to take to your students at a later date.

Virtual Field Trip
Date/time: Tuesday, October 13, 1PM
Location: Scott Metzger’s farm, Southeast Ohio farmer
VIEW THE RECORDED TRIP HERE
This 45-minute trip will connect students directly with Ross County soybean farmer Scott Metzger for a live ride-along in a combine as he harvests soybeans. Students will see technology used in a combine harvester and how it operates. They'll also learn what happens to soybeans after they leave the field and about their impact locally and across the globe. Find out how farm ecosystems work, including how soil health, weather/water cycles, and inputs contribute to yields, as well as the variety of careers available for STEM students in agriculture.
Virtual Lesson - Issues in Food Production
Date/Time: Wednesday, October 14, 1PM

Identify issues in nature that affect yield and food production on the farm level. Students will see several photos and discuss the phenomena that we hear about, but may not be able to explain how they affect farmers and food prices.

This 45-minute trip will connect students directly with Fred and Josh Yoder of Yoder Farms near Plain City, Ohio, where they grow 1,500 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat. Learn how this family implements sustainable practices on their farm to improve soil health and protect our environment. Ask questions and learn more about cover crops, no-till farming, carbon sequestration in soil, and precision techniques that protect water/soil ecosystems.

Learn how to determine the water quality of a local river by identifying the macroinvertebrates that live there! We will catch and quantify the local species to determine how human impact can impact the quality of our local water systems.

See a drone demonstration, how farmers collect and use data to make decisions on their farms, and where technology is headed in the future.
