Greene County, Ohio, teen moving to career in nursing
When Allison Hutchinson was 10 years old, one of her delights in life was spending time with a toddler cousin. Then, at age 3, the cousin died from a rare form of cancer.
“I was in fifth grade at the time,” Allison recalled. “I learned the meaning of the word ‘oncology’ and continued to learn more about it. I decided I wanted to be a nurse who specializes in helping children who have cancer.”
The goal has never wavered. It has been supported by her own research (a 13-page senior project), Fairborn High School science classes, the Allied Health program at Greene County Career Center and a student organization called Health Occupations Students of America, also known as HOSA-Future Health Professionals.
