Historical Documents

In compliance with Ohio Revised Code 3301.079(A)(1)(b) the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) includes references to the historical documents in its high school American History and American Government course syllabi and model curriculum. The documents are also referenced in the model curricula for grades four and eight.

The law requires the instruction of these documents in their original text and historical context. It also requires the assessment of the documents in the American history and American government end-of-courses state tests. Twenty-percent of the value of the American Government test must be based on the historical documents.

Classes of 2016 and 2017 and end of course exams

Students who will graduate in 2016 or 2017 are required to pass the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) or meet the requirements outlined in the Alternative Pathway to Graduation. In order for these students to be in compliance with Ohio Revised Code (ORC) 3301.079(A)(1)(b), these students must also take the state American history and government end-of-course exams. These tests cover content that includes the historical documents as outlined by law. However, juniors or seniors who are taking substitute courses as identified in the Graduation FAQs for 2015-2016 website, to satisfy their half unit requirements in American history or American government, will take the tests in those respective courses.

Class of 2018 and beyond

Students in the class of 2018 and beyond fall under the points system for graduation and take the Ohio created end of course exam for American history and government. The score will count towards graduation points if that is the pathway students choose for graduation.

Advanced placement and international Baccalaureate students - all classes

A student enrolled in Advanced Placement United States history or Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics is exempt from taking state end-of-course tests only if the student takes the AP test. If a student enrolled in either of these courses elects not to take the AP test, the student will be required to take the Ohio test.
