Model Curricula Updates for English Language Arts and Mathematics
Ohio’s Model Curricula help educators better understand the knowledge and skills called for in Ohio’s Learning Standards, which serve as the basis for Ohio’s State Tests.
Updates of Model Curriculum
Together with Ohio educators, the Department currently is updating the model curriculum originally adopted in 2011. The updating effort began this winter following the revisions to Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts (adopted Feb 2017). Educators commented on suggested changes to the model curriculum for K-12 English language arts and mathematics during a month-long survey that closed Sept. 13. After reviewing and integrating survey feedback, the Department will seek approval for the model curriculum from the State Board of Education this fall. Educator Writing Teams
To assist with the update effort this year, educators who are content experts in Ohio’s Learning Standards volunteered to serve on multiple writing teams. These educators, from kindergarten through higher education, represent various geographic areas and types of schools. Therefore, the updated model curriculum will reflect best practices and the expertise of many Ohio educators.
About the Model Curriculum
From the inception of the original model curriculum, educators statewide have helped the Department meet its obligation in state law to develop this resource. The purpose of Ohio’s model curriculum is to provide clarity to the standards as well as information to assist educators in planning and implementing their local curriculum. The model curriculum is not a complete curriculum, nor is it mandated for use.
