C3 Framework for Social Studies Standards Released
The College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards is now available for downloading. The Framework was conceptualized by individual state leaders in social studies education and supported by 15 professional organizations representing four core social studies content areas: civics, economics, geography, and history. It was written by experts in the academic disciplines and social studies education in collaboration with classroom teachers, state social studies education leaders, and professional organization representatives. The Ohio Department of Education participated in its development as well as Ohio educators. The primary purpose of the C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards is to provide guidance to states and districts on the concepts, skills and disciplinary tools necessary to prepare students for college, career, and civic life. In doing so, the C3 Framework offers guidance and support for rigorous student learning. That guidance and support takes form in an inquiry arc—a set of interlocking and mutually reinforcing ideas that feature the four Dimensions of informed inquiry in social studies: (1) developing questions and planning inquiries; (2) applying disciplinary concepts and tools; (3) evaluating sources and using evidence; and (4) communicating conclusions and taking informed action. Ohio Government in Action Nov.5-6 offers teachers behind-the-scenes look at state constitution
The Ohio Center for Law-Related Education is hosting a two-day conference providing behind-the-scenes, place-based learning in the state capital. Ohio Government in Action provides participants the chance to meet with leaders in state government and learn about the Ohio Constitution and how it is interpreted and enforced. The program content aligns with the teaching requirements of Am. Sub. S.B. 165. “Fall” into project-based programs that make it real for students
The Ohio Center for Law-Related Education offers academic programs that provide students opportunities to practice the role of citizen in authentic, meaningful ways. Ohio YMCA Youth in Government—civic engagement at its best
YMCA Youth in Government is a youth-led, experiential learning opportunity for students in grades 8-12 that encourages personal growth and lifelong, responsible citizenship. Each April, the program hosts a three-day conference, bringing students from all over Ohio together in Columbus to participate directly in a simulation of the legislative and judicial process. Facing History offers workshop on anti-Semitism Oct. 9 in Beachwood
Facing History will hold an interactive workshop on the history of anti-Semitism on Oct. 9 at the Maltz Museum in Beachwood. This workshop will draw largely from the publication, A Convenient Hatred: The History of Anti-Semitism and the Maltz Museum's exhibit, "The Dreyfus Affair.” For more information, visit here.
Holocaust education program provides first-person perspective for students
The Face to Face Holocaust education program conducted by Congregation Shaarey Tikvah in Beachwood gives students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to meet a Holocaust survivor, son or daughter of a survivor, or a liberator and hear their personal story. The three-hour sessions are available on many Tuesday and Thursday mornings and some Wednesday mornings from October through May. The Face to Face fieldtrip may be used as a supplement for literature, writing or social studies classes. First Freedom Center video and essay contest
The First Freedom Center is sponsoring an essay and video contest for high-school students to explore the history and current-day relevance of religious freedom.
Participating students must register online by Nov. 18 and the essay and accompanying materials must be postmarked by Nov. 25. Winners will be announced on Thomas Jefferson’s birthday on April 13, 2014. For more information, including topic, guidelines and other important details, click here.
Miami University offers Project Dragonfly’s Global Field Master’s Program and international graduate courses
Applications are now being accepted for 2014 field courses and the Global Field Program master's, which offer courses in 13 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas. New for 2014 is a course in India. Earth Expeditions graduate courses and the Global Field Program (GFP) master's degree bring together graduate students, scientists, educators and community leaders at critical conservation sites worldwide. Sites for 2014 include the Amazon, Australia, Baja, Belize, Borneo, Costa Rica, Guyana, Hawai'i, India, Kenya, Mongolia, Namibia and Thailand. Tuition for seven graduate credits and all basic in-country expenses are covered in the course costs, which are reduced because of support from Miami University. Accepted students are responsible for airfare. Earth Expeditions and the GFP can be completed part-time from anywhere in the United States or abroad.
