Reading Diagnostic Assessments
The reading diagnostic, also known as a screener, must be administered by September 30th for grades one, two, and three and by November 1st for kindergarten. It measures whether a student is on track or not on track for reading at grade level according to the previous year’s end-of-year standards.
Approved Vendor Comparable reading diagnostics 2016-2017
The Ohio Department of Education reviewed vendor proposals that were submitted in response to the RFQ for Comparable Assessment to Ohio’s Diagnostic Assessment for the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. This was not a competitive procurement process. The vendor proposals that met the criteria in the RFQ are listed below and can be administered by districts and schools beginning in the 2016-2017 school year.
The on track/not on track scores for each approved vendor assessment can be found on the vendor’s submitted Form C.

NOTE: The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) created a list of approved reading diagnostic assessments comparable to the ODE reading diagnostic assessment for assessing K-3 reading proficiency. Instead of using the state diagnostic assessments, districts may choose to use an assessment on the ODE approved list of diagnostic assessments as an option to determine if a student is on track for reading.
NOTE: The Ohio Department of Education does not approve the monetary aspect and cost structure of the provision of vendor provided assessment services. Monetary aspects and cost structure of the provision of services are determined between the District and the vendor. ODE will not provide any funds for district use of the assessments on this list or any other assessments the district may consider for use as a diagnostic.
NOTE: If a district is using an assessment not on the ODE approved list, that assessment may not be used to fulfill the Diagnostic administration requirement as required by law, but that assessment may still be used during the year for instructional purposes.
