Seamless Summer Option Program

The Seamless Summer Option (SSO) Program combines features of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program, and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This option reduces paperwork and administrative burden, making it easier to feed children from low-income areas during the traditional summer vacation periods.

Eligibility to operate the SSO Program includes the following:

1. At least 50% of the site’s student population is eligible for free or reduced meals (based on the most recent October claim); or at least 50% of children attending the summer program are eligible for free or reduced meals; and
2. Children up to age 18 (or up to 21 with an Individualized Education Plan) are served meals at no cost; and
3. Children must not receive a grade for attending the Summer program;
4. Schools offering academic summer school are allowed to operate the NSLP; and
5. School Food Authorities (SFA) must conduct at least one on-site visit at each SSO program to monitor operations and ensure compliance.
6. Schools must use the new NSLP food-based meal pattern.

SFAs interested in participating in the SSO program need to complete the site application in the Claims Reimbursement and Reporting System.
