Department of Defense Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
The Department of Defense (DoD) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program permits the School Food Authority (SFA) personnel to utilize entitlement from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Government Donated Food Program to obtain fresh fruit and vegetables through the Department of Defense. The DoD program is open to any SFA participating in the National School Lunch Program and served lunches in the previous school year thereby earning entitlement dollars for the current school year. The DoD program does not add entitlement dollars to the SFA account; it simply diverts some of the SFA’s earned entitlement dollars to the DoD program. The Ohio Department of Education, Office for Child Nutrition provides the DoD the entitlement amount for the SFA to use within the DoD Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.
When a SFA chooses to participate in the DoD Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, the SFA places its order through the DoD ordering system under the acronym: FFAVORS (Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Ordering and Receipting System). The DoD chooses the vendors participating in the program and has oversight of the program.
