Akron marketing teacher is national new educator of the year
Eric Mathews, Akron Public Schools marketing teacher, is the American Association for Career and Technical Education’s new career-tech educator of the year. He received the award during the association’s national conference in November.
Mathews became a teacher five years ago after nearly 20 years in private industry human resource management. His previous employers include Wendy’s, Ford Motor Company and Goodyear. As advisor for the student DECA organization and marketing program, he coaches students for state and national competitions. He led an initiative to teach global competencies and served on a team to help students obtain and retain jobs. He also has participated in the Aspiring Principal’s Academy with six weeks as interim assistant principal.

Ohio DECA, BPA selects new officers
Ohio DECA and the Business Professionals of America/Ohio Association, career-tech organizations designed for students in marketing and business programs, respectively, have 13 new state officers.
The seven DECA 2015 state officers selected on Nov. 18 are: Tyler Adkins, president, Western Brown High School (Mount Orab); Christy Wickiser, secretary/treasurer, Carey High School; Madison Kemp, executive vice president of community outreach, Milford High School; Brad Stubbs, executive vice president of leadership development, Lima Senior High School; Isaiah Brough, executive vice president of marketing, Fostoria High School; Evan Rymer, parliamentarian, Carey High School; and Brenna Franck, public relations representative, Penta Career Center/Oak Harbor High School.
The six Business Professionals of America state officers chosen on Nov. 19 are: Matthew Paluga, president, Northwest High School (Cincinnati)/Butler Tech; Michaela Frank, vice president, Stebbins High School (Dayton); Logan Emrich, secretary, Greenville High School; Brian Kurek, treasurer, Centerville High School; Caroline Moreno, Amelia High School Great Oaks; and Brenna McGovern, parliamentarian, Ellet High School (Akron).
