Important information from the Office of Chartered Nonpublic Schools
Due to the inclement weather experienced these last several weeks, nonpublic schools should be aware that they are responsible for ensuring that their 2013-2014 school calendars continue to meet compliance requirements. Students must be in session for a minimum of 178 days. Schools with calendars that fall short must make up days missed. Legal statute does not speak to calamity days for nonpublic (private) schools. This means that nonpublic schools must ensure they are open and in session for students to attend schools for the minimum number of days required by law.
Regarding charter changes, many schools may now be planning for changes they will make for the upcoming fall. If your school plans to make any changes that will affect its current charter, please be sure to inform the Office of Chartered Nonpublic Schools. Changes such as closing a school, changing location and adding grade levels can cause a school’s existing charter to be rendered null. Click here for details about charter changes and action steps.
