Background checks are required prior to licenses being issued or renewed
State law specifies that all teachers and other school staff members for whom a state license is required (e.g., nurses, physical therapists, counselors, etc.) must have BCI and FBI checks prior to a license being issued or renewed. Background checks must be no older than one year at the time the initial license is issued.
Non-licensed staff members and teachers with non-tax certificates or permanent certificates must have background checks conducted every five years. School bus drivers must have background checks conducted every six years.
After the initial background checks, an individual continuously residing in Ohio does not need to update the BCI background check, but must obtain an updated FBI check once every five years.
It is the responsibility of educators holding Ohio Department of Education licenses, certificates or permits, as well as their employers, to ensure background checks are updated within the five-year time frame, even if the expiration of a background check does not coincide with the expiration of a license.
