Straight A Fund can help community schools implement innovation

With the passage of House Bill 59, the state’s biennial budget, community schools and sponsors have access to $250 million through the Straight A Fund that promotes sustainable, innovative, local ideas and programs to help transform and modernize our education system.

Straight A Fund grants will provide seed money for the most creative and forward-thinking ideas. The fund will allow local educators to pursue three goals:

1.    Significant advancement in raising student achievement.

2.    Significant advancement in reducing spending.

3.    Significant advancement in targeting a greater share of resources to the classroom.

Community school and sponsor education consortia also can apply for Straight A Fund grants. These are partnerships that can include one or more school districts, educational services centers, higher education institutions and private entities. Innovation for consortia includes shared-services opportunities that involve reducing overhead costs and improving teaching and learning.

A Straight A Fund governing board will be named in the next several weeks, and the application process will begin shortly thereafter. Applicants will have about six weeks to submit proposals, with the final deadline in October. More information will be available in coming weeks on our Straight A Fund website, including the application and guidance materials.
