ODE Division of Learning Regional Meetings

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Division of Learning is offering a series of regional meetings to provide updates on major education initiatives that are being implemented. The events are targeted to school districts that are not participating in Race to the Top, however all school districts are welcome to sign up to come. There are sessions targeted for district and school leaders and teacher leaders. The meetings will take place on various dates between April 2 through May 16 in Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Youngstown, Toledo, Zanesville and Findlay. All sessions are free but seating is limited. The following initiatives will be addressed: the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, Student Growth Measures, Electronic Teacher and Principal Evaluation System (eTPES), Resident Educator Year 3 and 4, Ohio Teacher Evaluation System (OTES), Ohio Principal Evaluation System (OPES), the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the Online Licensure System (My Educator Profile). OSD Superintendent Search

The Ohio School for the Deaf (OSD), located in Columbus, is seeking a dynamic and experienced educational leader for the position of superintendent. The Ohio School Boards Association is assisting the school and the ODE, its reporting agency, in the search. OMNIE Project – Post available SLP positions for no charge

2013-2014 is the final year for the Ohio Master Network Initiatives in Education (OMNIE) Project to address the availability of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) for Ohio schools. Open SLP positions may be posted on the OMNIE Web Recruiting System at no charge. This system aids in tracking available positions in the state. The OMNIE Project is the collaborative endeavor of dedicated individuals who have undertaken a leadership role in identifying issues necessary to ensure the education, recruitment, and retention of qualified speech-language pathologists in Ohio schools. The OMNIE Project is sponsored and supported by the ODE and collaborates with the Ohio Board of Speech Pathology & Audiology (OBSLPA) , the Ohio Speech Language and Hearing Association (OSLHA), the Ohio School Speech Pathology Educational Audiology Coalition (OSSPEAC).

Universal Design for Learning Resource from OCALI The National Center on UDL is pleased to announce a new resource for the field developed by the Ohio Center on Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI) in collaboration with the IDEA Partnership. This free slide presentation provides an overview of how students with disabilities (who need intensive supports) can be served in an educational environment that has integrated the principles of UDL. NSTTAC Training: Opportunities to Improve Postsecondary Transition for Youth with Disabilities

Sponsored by the Ohio Secondary Transition Improvement Grant, a federally funded project administered by the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission (RSC) in collaboration with the ODE Office for Exceptional Children NSTTAC staff is recognized as national experts in the field of secondary transition for students with disabilities.

NSTTAC conducted the research that identified Evidence Based Practices and Predictors of Postsecondary Success for Transition Youth. David Test and Catherine Fowler from NSTTAC are the primary trainers.

Intended Outcome:Adult Rehabilitation professionals (VR, DD) and educators (Intervention Specialists, Transition Coordinators) will strategize on ways to work collaboratively to improve postsecondary outcomes for students with disabilities.

Topics include:

  • Removing barriers to interagency collaboration
  • Coordinating services in the IEP and IPE
  • Implementing evidence based practices
  • How VR can contribute to IEP development
  • How educators can analyze assessment information in vocation terms
  • Work together as district/region teams to formulate plans for collaboration

Ohio Board of Regents - Regional Dyslexia Task Force Meetings

In partnership with the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR), the Task Force for Pre-Service Teacher Training in Dyslexia will work with the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading (2010) to develop guidelines for pre-service teacher education programs in Ohio. The resulting new pre-service guidelines will be based on the specific knowledge and skills needed to identify, assess, provide appropriate instruction for, and monitor the progress of, individuals with dyslexia as designated in the IDA standards.

Ohio School Psychologists Association Spring Conference

Ohio School Psychologists Association (OSPA) Spring Conference Registration is still open. The conference will be held on April 18-19, 2013, featuring Russell Barkley, Ph.D., internationally recognized expert on ADHD, who has published more than 200 scientific articles and book chapters related to the nature, assessment and treatment of ADHD and related disorders.
