Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a checklist that teachers could use to determine and impact our students’ likelihood for success in school and in life? After surveying more than 4 million children from varying backgrounds and circumstances, researchers from the Search Institute have found that there is in fact a checklist of sorts, to predict success. It is called the 40 Developmental Assets ™ and it has become the most widely used approach to positive youth development in the U.S.
Training and tests are now available for educators who need to update their credentials as evaluators for the Ohio Teacher or Principal Evaluation Systems. The National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) is administering the re-calibration process. To successfully complete re-calibration, which is required every two years, teacher evaluators must take three hours of online training and principal evaluators must take two hours of online training. Both teacher and principal evaluators also need to pass the appropriate tests. More information is available on the department’s website.
In August 2013, the Ohio Department of Education informed high schools that they would be required to give PSAT assessments to sophomores beginning in October 2014.
In February 2014, the department communicated to district superintendents that it will not require that the PSAT be given in October 2014.
