How to Advance a Two-Year License to a Five-Year Professional License

Career Technical Workforce Development Teachers who already hold another 5-Year Professional Teaching License

The following is required:

  • A completed CTE-37 form signed by the university verifying program requirements for the new license have been met
  • An online application to Advance from the 2-Year Provisional License to the 5-Year Professional Career Technical License

Teachers who Completed Three Years of Teaching Outside the State of Ohio

The following is required:

  • A letter on district letterhead, signed by the superintendent or human resources director, verifying the subject(s) and grade level(s) taught each school year
  • A copy of the out of state teaching license(s) verifying each school year taught
  • An online application to Advance from the 2-Year Provisional License to the 5-Year Professional License

Principals advancing to the 5-year professional license from a 2-year Provisional License

Principals have the option to advance and align this license to an existing 5-year license; or, the license may be issued as a separate 5-year license with an effective date that is reflective of the current year. If aligned, the license will take on the validity period of the existing license.

The following is required:

  • An online application to Advance from the 2-Year Provisional License to the 5-Year Professional License

Counselors Advancing to a 5-year Professional License from a 2-year Provisional license.

School counselors have the option to advance and align this license to an existing 5-year professional license; or, the license may be issued as a separate 5-year professional license with an effective date that is reflective of the current year. If aligned, the license will take on the validity period of the existing license.

The following is required:

  • An online application to Advance from the 2-Year Provisional License to the 5-Year Professional License

How Do I Complete My Online Application?

  • Access your SAFE account.
  • Click on ODE.CORE.
  • Select My Credentials.
  • Select Advance from the drop down menu to the left of the credential you are advancing, and then select Apply.
  • Complete the three steps of the application, and submit payment.

Please note: If you will be a participant in the Ohio Resident Educator Program (Ohio's beginning teacher induction program), then you will need to complete an online application to Transition from the 2-Year Provisional License to the 4-Year Resident Educator License.
