Intervention Specialist or Early Childhood Intervention Specialist Supplemental Teaching License

The supplemental teaching license allows educators holding a currently valid Ohio standard teaching certificate or license to teach in a supplemental area, at the request of an employing Ohio school district, while they are in the process of obtaining standard licensure for that area.

Initial Requirements

  • A currently valid standard Ohio teaching certificate or license;
  • 6 semester hours of intervention specialist coursework. This requirement may be waived at the request of the employing superintendent if he/she determines that the teacher's experience and training sufficiently enables him/her to meet the needs of the assigned students. (Waiver of coursework is available in Application Data section of the application.)

The employing school district shall assign a teacher with teaching experience and licensure in the area in which the supplemental teaching license is requested, to serve as a mentor to the supplemental teaching license holder.

Requirements for First Renewal

  • A currently valid standard Ohio teaching certificate or license;
  • 6 semester hours of coursework in a program leading to licensure in the area in which the supplemental teaching license is held (completed after the issue date of the initial supplemental license);
  • Successful completion of the content assessment for the licensure area.

Requirements for Second Renewal

  • A currently valid standard Ohio teaching certificate or license;
  • An additional 6 semester hours of coursework in a program leading to licensure in the area in which the supplemental teaching license is held (completed after the issue date of the license to be renewed).

Eligibility for a Standard License

Option A

Option B

Ohio Department of Education Equivalent Review

  • Completion of a 30-semester-hour major in the area with a minimum of 18 semester hours of core intervention specialist coursework, a minimum of 12 semester hours in the teaching of reading (9 semester hours in the teaching of reading and 3 semester hours in the teaching of phonics);
  • Verification from the employing superintendent that the supplemental teaching license holder has taught successfully in the licensure area for a minimum of two years.

Note: Once an individual has been issued a supplemental teaching license for a particular licensure area or teaching field, it will be necessary to complete the supplemental licensure program or the equivalent and be issued a standard teaching license in that area, prior to requesting a supplemental teaching license in another area.
