5-Year Associate License

In accordance with rule 3301-24-05 of the Ohio Administrative Code, the Ohio Department of Education issues five-year associate licenses to applicants who meet qualifications in the following areas:

  • Prekindergarten Associate
  • Educational Paraprofessional
  • Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired
  • Occupational Therapy Assistant
  • Physical Therapy Assistant

Requirements for Licensure

PREKINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATES, EDUCATIONAL PARAPROFESSIONALS AND INTERPRETERS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED

Applicants must complete an approved, traditional preparation program through an accredited college/university that culminates in the college/university’s recommendation for licensure in the following areas:

  • Prekindergarten Associate (see our Educator License Exams webpage for exam requirements)
  • Educational Paraprofessional (no exam required for licensure)
  • Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired (no exam required for licensure)

Please view the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Program Finder for a list of accredited colleges/universities that offer approved programs leading to Ohio licensure.

OCCUPATIONAL AND PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSISTANTS

Applicants must hold an active Ohio board license in the following areas to be considered for the associate license (completion of an additional school licensure program is not required):

  • Occupational Therapy Assistant
  • Physical Therapy Assistant

Please note that you must submit your official transcripts with your application for the license. Additionally, the Department must be able to verify that you hold an active Ohio board license.

You must submit BCI and FBI background checks for initial licensure. Please see our Background Check FAQs for information.

If you live outside of Ohio, please email the Office of Educator Licensure at the Ohio Department of Education to request fingerprint cards.

Instructions for Submitting Official Transcripts

Please be prepared to scan and upload your original, official transcript in PDF format to your OH|ID account. Please note that we cannot accept grade reports, photos/photocopies of transcripts or unofficial transcripts. Before uploading your transcripts, please see the following requirements. You may also click here for a video tutorial on scanning and uploading transcripts:

  • The date your degree was awarded must be visible.
  • Include all pages of the transcript (front and back).
  • The registrar's signature and transcript key/guide must be visible.
  •  Create one PDF file per transcript (do not upload pages separately).
  • Upload transcripts from multiple universities separately (i.e. each transcript should be one PDF file).
  • Electronic transcripts may only be sent directly from the issuing college/university to educator.licensure@education.ohio.gov.
  • Please do not submit transcripts that will expire or are password protected or locked.
  • International Credentials: You must provide a course-by-course analysis from a Department approved international credential evaluation service for college coursework completed outside the United States. Please see our list of approved organizations

Application Instructions

  • Access your OH|ID account.
  • Click Educator Licensure and Records (CORE).
  • Complete the online application from your CORE Dashboard (click Teachers and then Associate License – 5 Year).
