Presentations from program coordinator meetings offer helpful tips

The Ohio Department of Education Resident Educator Program staff held five program coordinator network meetings around the state and we were thrilled with the turnout at each event. Note new changes to CORE now completed

Many program coordinators already know that we have an updated CORE resident educator (RE) registration system, as you have been busy registering your teachers. For those of you who don’t know, CORE has a new look and functions a little differently than in the past. Please read the CORE User’s Manual which you can find here or at the top of the CORE RE registration page. The manual has screen shots and important tips for registering, entering completion criteria and entering prior teaching credit. The reports for CORE are currently off-line while the department redesigns them to work with the new system. We hope to have the new reports up and working for you soon. Please make sure to register your resident educators in the system as soon as you can.

Even more important than knowing dates and data collection points, your resident educator needs to know you! Spending time together just getting to know each other will benefit both you and your assigned resident educators.

Ohio Continuum of Teacher Development is a valuable mentoring tool

If you are looking for an activity to use with your resident educators when planning lessons and establishing professional goals, introduce them to the Ohio Continuum of Teacher Development within the Mentor Toolkit. Based on the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession, this tool allows mentors to demonstrate self-reflective practices and model goal-setting based on a rubric. It is a wonderful instrument to guide professional practices toward accomplishing new levels of competence and achievement. Note that we expect resident educators to enter the profession as “emerging” on the standards’ developmental scale.
